Ide Community Orchard lies to the west of Pynes Farm, High Street, Ide, and is about three miles south-west of Exeter city centre.
It is 3.4 acres of ancient post-medieval orchard. It holds 14 mature cider apple trees; and now an additional 68 apple and 4 pear trees planted in January 2020. The trees are a mixture of about 20 different traditional heritage Devon varieties.
The orchard had been used for grazing horses for 50 years and the ground and trees neglected. Ide Parish Council took a tenancy on the land in 2018, and bought the freehold on 29 April 2022, after six years of negotiations to buy it, and a year of fund-raising.
It is now freely open to the public from dawn till dusk as a beautiful open green community space, overlooking the village, with mown drives and picnic tables. We also plan to run it as a fruitful orchard, and as a place for community events.
