Orchard Link has a range of equipment that members can hire for apple pressing and pasteurising.

Welcome to the  2021 Hire Season! This information has been reworked for the new season, so all prospective hirers are advised to read it in full before making a booking; it contains important information and updated Terms and Conditions of hire. Please note that for insurance purposes we can only hire equipment to paid up members of Orchard Link.

If you have a query about your hire, please first READ this information again and your confirmation email. It contains all the information to answer 95% of queries.

Bookings can only be made by paid-up members; if you are not a member you must first join and pay through the website to get access to the booking process.

If you need to Join then follow this link: JOIN ORCHARD LINK .

Given the high value of the equipments hired out without deposit, members hiring for the first time will be required to provide proof of address (the membership registered address) before a booking is confirmed. Send a scan or photo of a current Council Tax bill or a recent (3 months) utility bill to presshire@orchardlink.org.uk when the booking is complete. If you omit to do this, we will remind you, but the booking will be cancelled up to a week but no less than 72 hrs before it is due if this is not received.

Our booking system can take multiple equipment day bookings per payment. Simply select “Add another booking”. The system then goes back to the equipment select page and you run through the booking process again. The booking system will remember your contact details for successive bookings but you will need to enter the location for each separate element.

We have a range of different sized presses for extracting the juice, electric mills (for pulping apples) and pasteurisers. For the 2020 season onwards, a pasteuriser is included in the press hires; the prices have adjusted accordingly. An additional pasteuriser will be available for hire for those who may need more than one.  When you book a press, it is provided as a complete ‘kit’ with the mill, buckets, etc: a full list of equipment can be found on the links below. You will need to provide a safe electricity supply for the mill (240V supply capable of handling a 2.2Kw load and you are responsible for protecting the cables against water ingress throughout the hire), a good supply of clean water to clean fully the equipment after use, and any smaller items like sieves and funnels for bottling, as well as (of course) your own bottles.

To hire you need to be located in south west Devon between Exeter and Plymouth, including both cities to their limits, bounded by the Exe River to the east, the A30 to the north and the A386 to the west.  If you live JUST outside this area, then please contact us BEFORE you book and equipment; we may be able to be flexible if it’s a stone’s throw. A schematic map is here.

If you are logged in as a paid Member, this link will take you to the calendar of current confirmed hires to show you when the equipment is available, and to give you the contact information for previous and subsequent hirers of your chosen equipment to manage transfers.  If you are not logged in, please login now.  There is also a link to this calendar on the successful login page.

Once you’ve read this, close the window to go back to the hire page where you can decide which equipment suits you best, then click “Go to Booking Page” which will take you to our on-line booking system. This is a booking system run by SimplyBookIt, which manages the whole booking process, including payment and availability management.  If you are hiring on behalf of a Community Orchard or other co-operative group, the named hirer must be a member and be present and supervising the use of the equipment on the hire day for the insurance to be valid.

The link takes you to a list of the equipment available and once you make your choice, to a calendar showing the availability of that particular piece of equipment. Equipment is hired by the day: find a day that is free, select it and you will be led through the booking process. Note that you must make your booking at least two days before you want the equipment, although it may be possible to book inside that date in the event of a cancellation (see T&C below). If you cannot select the date you want for the equipment you want that means it is already booked for that day.  Please select a different day, or available equipment on that day.

Finally you will be transferred to our PayPal page to make a payment using your debit or credit card or using your existing PayPal account. The “Pay Later” option on the booking page is only for large commercial organisations (e.g. the National Trust, Sharpham Trust and Schumacher College).

Any other booking made using “Pay Later” will be cancelled when seen; you may lose out on your chosen date to someone booking and paying properly.

When making a booking, you must complete the payment within 15 minutes, or the booking will not be made.

On receipt of your booking, you will receive a detailed automatically generated e-mail message confirming your booking, and providing more information about how to arrange collection of the equipment nearer the time and how to find out who has the equipment before and after you. It also contains a link if you later need to cancel your hiring (see cancellation terms below). If you do not receive a confirmation email you have not made a booking.

As part of the hiring process, your email, mobile phone number and rough location (as entered on the hire system page) will be visible through the hire calendar which only logged in members can see. (Please also see our Privacy Policy).

Please take the time to read your confirmation email thoroughly as it contains the information which answers the most frequent queries raised.

Each hirer will normally collect the equipment from the previous hirer, or from our store at Ugborough, near Ivybridge, depending on where it is after the last hirer. We are only able to hire equipment out to Orchard Link members for use in locations in South Devon, see the area limit above. We expect our hirers to manage the collection, return and transfer of the equipments through good communication with the hirers before and after them, or if to/from Ugborough, with our depot manager. The booking confirmation emails contain all the information necessary to do this.

Pick up and Handover

Equipment is to be picked up from the previous hirer the night before your hiring date after 6.30pm and should be available fully cleaned at 6.30pm for the next hirer to pick up.

After you have passed on the equipment to the next hirer or back to the store, you must email Presshire to inform us where the equipment is then located.  Please note that if you have not done so then you will retain responsibility for any subsequent loss or damage until we are next notified of any subsequent handover.

Change of Date or Cancellation

Change of Date:

If you simply want to change the date, provided there are more than 7 days to go to the hire date AND you have checked through the booking system that the new date is available for that equipment, then please email Presshire, or leave a voicemail on 0330 043 7846. As soon as the email or the voicemail is read, the date will be changed if still available. This will remove the need for a cancellation and re-booking with associated costs.

If you need to cancel your booking completely, please do so as soon as possible using the cancellation link in the confirmation email. This will cancel your booking instantly and remove it from the system. It will maximise your chances of a refund (see below for terms). If for some reason you cannot do this, then email your cancellation to Presshire, or leave a voicemail on 0330 043 7846; although these alternative means may incur a slight delay. In both of the latter cases please ensure you include your name, the date of the hire and which equipment is involved.

The presses and the electric mills are completely safe if operated correctly, but could cause injury if misused, therefore the safety instructions must be followed.  Hiring members are responsible for ensuring all those using the equipment are fully briefed on its correct operation before use and supervised throughout the hire period.  Children in particular should be supervised at all times when close to the milling and pressing equipment and ideally should be at least 2 meters away from the equipment.

Insurance: Orchard Link insurance is only valid if the named hirer is present throughout the period of hire and supervising the safe operation of the equipment at all times and in accordance with the operating instructions (See the Safety section above). Orchard Link will accept no liability for any damage or injury, however caused, if this condition is not followed.

Cancellation charges: If you cancel a booking:

  • Within two days of hire start for any reason: no refund.
  • Within seven days of hire start: 50% refund (80% if we can re-hire).
  • More than seven days before hire start: 100% refund.

Refunds for PayPal bookings will be made through PayPal (quick and easy). Depending on the nature of the refund, we reserve the right to withhold any PayPal charges arising from the transactions.  Refunds for card transactions can only be done by BACS which will take longer.  If you paid by card, and you cancel, please ensure you supply full bank details for BACS transfer.

Care of equipment: Hirers are required to use the equipment strictly in accordance with the instructions provided and to pass it on in clean and operable condition.

Losses and breakages or theft: Hirers must check the equipment on receipt to ensure everything is present and working correctly. If there are any losses, breakages or malfunctions or any equipment is lost through theft, you must notify Orchard Link, the previous and the next hirer straight away. Orchard Link will not accept responsibility for loss of hired equipment time, caused by failure to notify of a known loss, break or malfunction. To be fair to all hirers, in the event of damage or loss caused by misuse, failure to follow the operating instructions, or mistreatment, or if you fail to report a loss or damage you are likely to be liable for any additional costs and you may lose your opportunity to hire the equipment again in the future. You are responsible for the safe custody and reasonable precautions against theft whilst the equipment is in your care. Our insurance will not cover theft if reasonable precautions are not taken, so you are likely to become liable in such circumstances.

As noted on the hire page of the website, you remain the hirer of the equipment, with all attendant liabilities, until you notify us that you have passed it on to the next hirer or have returned it to the depot.

If you have a query about your booking or the equipment which is not covered by the detail of your confirmation email, you can email Presshire, leave a voicemail on 0330 043 7846 or you can contact us through the website.
